INTRODUCTION

Our 2019 harvest ran 3 weeks later than we have ever seen.  Please look at our crop report and shipping timeline for the full information. I have tried to let people know why their orders have not arrived, but hang on they are coming.

One of most popular and unique products we offer, is the boxes of roasting pinecones. These are a very seasonal product, which come right before we begin ship the pine nuts.  Because, we have no way to keep cones cool for an extended amount of time, we only offer these for about 30 days.  In various countries around the world, people buy roasting cones at the local markets  It was at a client’s request that we began offering the boxes of nut cones. http://pinenut.com/pine-nuts-sale/buy-pinon-pinenuts-shell.shtml

Nostalgically, the pinecone boxes carry wonderful memories for people who once gathered pinon in family groups.  Native people would collect the pinecones, then roast the cones in the charcoals of their fires. People who cannot go harvest their own love receiving these boxes in the mail.  The pinon cones remind people of their campfires and happy times in the forest.  They are a mental gateway to the pinon forest of the Southwest.

The pinecones open like flowers, shellacked from the sugars and are preserved for crafts, such as the classic pinecone Thanksgiving Turkey, pinecone wreaths, or bird feeders.  One of our clients sent me, the most beautiful silver spray painted, and glitter decorated pinon cone. I keep it in an abalone shell and enjoy all the colors as the sun hits it glitters.  The decorated pinecones add such a personal touch to gifts and teaching children to work with wild products, seeing the result is rewarding to all parents.

The raw pinecones are extremely fragrant.  I often leave a couple in the back window of my car, in the closet and in dresser drawers, in vents or near the heat source. After extracting the nuts, one can use them to start their evening fire.  It is hard to imagine a more useful natural product, or, a sustainable one.  Here, I extract the essential oil from the pinon cone and produce a product called “Pineitall”, a 100% natural cleaner.  It is excellent for cell phones, tv screens, computer screens, mirrors, and all glass. Pinon is known for its antiseptic properties and our laboratory testing revealed phyto chemicals known to be anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.  I use it as an alternative to various personal care products, including hair spray and deodorant. Ok, so I live and breath pinon – no surprise.

One does not want to forget our feathered friends. Large birds like Mcaws love to shred the cones and extract the pine nuts. The pine nut cones are very special treat / toy for the big birds.  I have heard from bird folks, that the shredding of the cone helps the birds with both boredom and foot care.  The bird people are generally very glad to have untreated, 100 % natural, US made pine nuts and pinecone treats for their pets.

Any leftover pine cones can be used to  start the woodstoves.  It is rather amazing, to consider all the uses of the pinon pine cone.

2019 Pinon Crop Report from Pinenut.com

I have never had a year like this, nor, has anyone I work with in the pinon industry. Pine cones were extraordinarily slow to develop. As late as October 5th, pine cones were still green and closed tightly.  These conditions make for a complex harvest.   We know when to harvest pine cones, by cutting them open and seeing that the kernel is completely encased in its shell. If one picks to early, the nuts either sour, or shrivel up and become tasteless.  Fortunately, the people I work with did not pick cone too early. These are some of the best nuts I have ever seen – BUT, we are running 3 weeks behind normal harvest timelines.

Because, we held off picking until the cones were perfectly ripened, we are unsure of how many nuts will be collected.  Pricing is very likely to rise, as the harvest season itself, is not likely to go three weeks longer.  Those of us in Colorado are seeing our 1st snow fall and hard freeze.  This will cause all cones to open and shed their nuts.  Nevada and Utah are also seeing temperature drops and those cones are likely to release those treasured nuts.

In July, I was predicting a truly banner crop. Cones were everywhere – then suddenly in August – they were gone. Very few remained on trees In New Mexico and Arizona and Utah. The cool spring set back the development of all nut cones in the Southwest. Luckily, I have purchased another pinon land property and had plenty of time to look for coning – as I learned to fish this summer.  Some of those areas have held cones, but the harvest was harder. I have 4,000 lbs of hard shell (pinus edulis) .    They will go fast.

Prices are as low as they are going to be.  Several pine nut business have imported nuts from Pakistan .  They are very easy to spot, long and thin, with a soft shell . They look like torpedos. These are NOT Paper Shell pinon.. Several people who vend pinon have called me, in a panic having been sold these nuts rather than pinon.  My suggestion is, to look at. www.Pakistanpinenuts.com, download the photos and a copy of The New Mexico Pinon Nut Act (       ) then dispute the charge – item not as described as your cause of dispute.

Also, last year’s soft shell is being offered and if the price or offer is simply too good to be true, it probably is.

If you find your order, filled with last years product, you can still dispute the charge as “not as described”.  Hopefully, people are familiar enough with the nuts not to get caught up scams.

ORDER Shipping information

As we are so late in putting out this news, I am keeping prices at their current level until October 15th.  Prices will rise after that time.  Currently, there are more than 300 back orders. If you have a pending order, please watch for a shipping notice via paypal.  Over the weekend, I will start printing shipping labels and preparing the packaging.  But the nuts are not done – yet.  I look to start posting nuts around 10/17.  Pinecone boxes are shipping at this time.  Please be patient, we are working as hard as we can.  The pay off on the long development is larger sweeter nuts than we have had for years.  (If cones are picked too soon, the nuts sour and dry out – no nut before its time) .

Our pine nuts will be sized after we catch up with pending orders.   The nuts are large and beautiful this year.  When size sorting, the small nuts are removed.  The % of HUGE Jumbos vary year to year. It is looking like there will be more JUMBOS than we have seen in years.   Yes, size sorted and graded will be available for the holidays,  however,  we have to get caught up, with those people who purchased in August, September and October.  I hope to have them on the website by November 1st.

SHELL FREE PINON PINE NUTS

We hope to have shell free nuts toward the end of winter and start of spring.  There will be less than 1,000 pounds of the shell free, American pine nuts.
