Right around Valentine’s Day, George made a table top pine nut sheller from a food processor for about $20.00. It was pretty nifty but there was lots of wasted kernels. One problem with the first design was that it was very particular to pine nut sizing. We were "messing around" with all different types of designs
(my husband is brilliant and he invents some real neat things, including a portable, emergency, geodesic housing unit made of chloroplast)and George put together an inexpensive, pine nut sheller, which is the hands of a Missouri manufacturer.
George worked with food processing and commercial food service production in Alaska. He designed a device which would meet commercial food service standards, come apart easily for cleaning and do a decent job of shelling pine nuts. We see the price point at about $200.00 without the power drive. The sheller is designed for any pine nut, Siberian, Korean, New Mexico Hard shell and of course, the AMERICA'S PINE NUT - the jumbo soft shell. Often times, you can find cheap pine nuts in shell and a food establishment can save a great deal of money by shelling its own pine nuts.
