|« Vanbulance gets a dragon fly make over and we arrive on the harvest grounds, despite all odds||Benefits of managing private pinyon lands for pine nut productions and how to harvest, handle and market your pinon nuts »|
We are gearing up to take off for the pinon harvest out west. Our harvest crew is already on the ground, set for the first frost . They are ready to go all out in harvesting pinon (the New Mexico pinon). I was sort of raked over the coals today, for not hiring Navajo people to pick for us. My apologies, if there are Native people who want to pick pinon with us, email me. Our crew right now are guys known to the crew boss. We have great areas, mostly private lands and we worked hard to secure entry. We pay people, to harvest on their land. That is how my company opperates. We are also paying very, very well (pickers make up to $6.00 per pound) and the cones are weighing down the trees! PERFECT harvest conditions. I am so grateful.
The same client (street vender in ABQ) told me the Native People had some small picking pinon around Cuba and Window Rock. Sort of a surprise to me, as I sure did not see anything in the area. But, the people who live in those places, surely know more than I do! She also said there was a bit of pinon north of Santa Fe. That area was hit REALLY hard by the bark bettle, so it is surprising there is even rumor of a harvest patch there.
We have great harvest grounds, lots of rain, really big nuts for P. Edulis. It is a harvest to be proud of. Our pre-season sales have doubled this year thus far and I am still about three weeks out till shipping. We have a great price on soft shell, and people trust our hard shell, because we don't sell old nuts. I think, more people offering pinon on the internet has turned into a real plus for our company. We are far from perfect. Yet, we have learned from our mistakes and now have an amazing shipping system with free tracking. I work to have as much respect for the people, as I have for the forest. The fact, it is about the forest first helps a lot with our business. The new site tells my story pretty well. Credibility and commitment to the forest has created a noteworthy brand in the American pine nut industry, Pinon Penny's Pine Nuts. A heart felt, thank you - to those clients who have returned to purchase their pinon nuts from us.
